What is the Cause of
ADHD?
Craig Broussard -
One of the very first questions that parents often ask when
their child or children have been diagnosed with ADHD is
“why?” How is it that their child could have this
disorder?
The fact is that nobody knows the actual cause of ADHD. Of
course, this isn’t exactly the answer that these parents
are looking for. They want to look at their lives, their
medical histories, and other factors that may be the reason
for their child’s ADHD.
The trouble that researchers and doctors face when trying
to find the cause of ADHD, is the sheer volume of
possibilities. There are so many possible causes that it
makes it very difficult - if not impossible - to pin down
the single cause responsible ADHD with the resources that
are available. Therefore, health professionals will instead
try to have parents focus on the future and how the family
will move forward with the right help and proper
treatments.
This has not, however, stopped scientists from working to
try to identify the underlying cause of ADHD in order to
discover the best ways to treat, and perhaps one day
prevent ADHD’s development. If there is one thing that is
becoming apparent to ADHD researchers, it is that the
evidence is showing that ADHD is not a result of parenting
or environment as a whole. Instead, it seems to be a
biologically caused disorder.
This means that there is no direct relationship between a
child’s schooling and home life, and the development of
ADHD. It is not caused by a dysfunctional family, or a
broken home. In fact, there are just as many ADHD
occurrences in stable family situations as there are in
dysfunctional families.
Recognizing this is very important to ADHD parents, because
it helps them to alleviate the natural sensation of guilt
that they often feel when they blame themselves for the
behavioral symptoms associated with ADHD.
Many theories have been developed over the last few decades
to help to explain how ADHD is caused. While many have been
disproved or have lead to dead ends, others remain exciting
and promising. With the continuing improvement and new
developments of technology that allow scientists to study
the brain, more tests are becoming available to find out
where ADHD impacts the brain, and where it may come
from.
Until the time that we actually know the specific cause of
ADHD, it is vital that parents of ADHD children keep
themselves informed, and know that nothing that they have
done has caused this disorder. The best thing for them to
do is to remain educated about ADHD and proceed with the
safest and most effective treatment for their
child.
